Interview with Max Lucado

I had a chance to chat with Max Lucado today, and as a big fan of his writing for many years, it was quite an honor. We chatted about his new campaign calling for everyone to come together to pray for President-Elect Obama as he is inaugurated on January 20th, 2009. You can find out more about that, and sign up to be a prayer partner, here. We also chatted about Twitter, which is one of my new obsessions. You can follow Max's Twitter...and don't forget to follow Power FM too! Then, finally, we discussed his new book Cast of Characters: Common People in the Hands of An Uncommon God. And gave away a couple of copies of it!

Did ya miss the interview? Listen to it here!

12 Days of Christmas Tour

The Afters played a hometown show last night, along with Nevertheless and Remedy Drive at Live @ Mokah in Dallas. My birthday was this past Wednesday, and since it was in the middle of the week...I decided that I wanted to celebrate by going to this show on Saturday, 'cause I love The Afters and always enjoy seeing them again. It was a lot of fun.

Remedy Drive was very entertaining, with the lead singer attempting hand/headstands on his keyboard and whatnot. Too bad I never actually caught that on camera. I have a feeling their album, Daylight is Coming, is going to spend a good amount of time in my CD player!

Remedy Drive

Nevertheless was great as well...

Jade & Rachel with Nevertheless.

And The Afters never disappoint.

They even treated us to some Christmas songs, since it was the 12 Days of Christmas Tour afterall.

Oh, and speaking of celebrating my birthday...the crew surprised me on Wednesday by coming into the studio, singing Happy Birthday and offering little pies. Haha!

I Am Second

I admit, the billboard got my attention. Just a guy (I didn't even recognize who it was, still not sure who it was) and the words "I Am Second." Fine, I'll bite. I googled it, and found myself watching video after video of testimonies. Wow. Powerful stuff. Jason Castro (American Idol), Josh Hamilton (Texas Rangers), Brian "Head" Welch (hopefully, you know who he is by now!) and more.

If I am second, who's first? Well, if you don't already know, you'll just have to find out for yourself.

I just laughed so hard it hurt...I'm serious.

So, I was going to to look up some info on their Home For the Holiday concert coming up in Greenville. But I got distracted (yeah, me, distracted? NEVER!) by their Cover Tune Grab Bag feature on their blog. I watched the latest one "Crazy" and laughed. Then I watched the next one and laughed harder. And well, by the 5th or 6th video, I was laughing and crying and doubling over at how ridiculous these guys are. In a good way. David had to leave the room 'cause he couldn't even take it (or actually work or something, psshhh). Mercy Me knows what they're doing. They know how to blog, how to keep their listeners coming back to their website, how to stay connect with their fans, how to have FUN (plus their "real" songs aren't so bad either). Make sure you check out Bart's dancing in the "Jesus Is Just Alright" video! These are the guys who brought you the gut-wrenching, makes-me-cry-every-time-I-hear-it "I Can Only Imagine"...and then here they are in all their glory... Oh dear.

So, if you have some time on your hands and you want a good, hearty laugh, I highly recommend checking out the Mercy Me Cover Tune Grab Bags! stomach still hurts and I'm still wiping my eyes. My favorites were "Take On Me" and "Jesus Is Just Alright" but don't forget "Jump" and "Eye Of The Tiger" and OH MY GOSH "Ice Ice Baby"....ahahahhahah! Oh geez, just go through page after page and watch them ALL, you won't be sorry!!!

Giving away Underoath Tickets is serious business!

I can't believe how many crazy calls I got all morning long leading up to the giveaway of the Underoath tickets. I wish I had recorded some of you people! Haha. Certainly entertained me at least! But never fear, even though two pairs have already been given away do still have two chances to win left!

Keep listening! Drue will be giving away a pair around 5:15pm, then Adrian will give some away during the All Request Show around 8:15pm.

Keep up with what we're giving away and when here.

Oh, and Battleship started today on the Morning Show! A boat has already been sunk! Again, never fear...there are still 14 boats on the board! Play along!

Jesus For President: Politics for Ordinary Radicals by Shane Claiborne & Chris Haw

I have just finished up the book by Shane Claiborne and Chris Haw entitled Jesus For President. How timely, I know! It was definitely interesting, just as the previous book I read by Shane Claiborne (The Irresistable Revolution). I don't agree with him a lot of the time, but I do admire his passion to live out his beliefs. I find his writing eye-opening and definitely inspiring.

The book covers a lot of ground. Giving a quick history lesson run through of the way things worked "before there were kings and presidents" and then touching on the way emperors, kings and presidents evolved over time. It's main focus, through the first half of the book, seemed to be comparing the U.S. to the Roman Empire. It definitely brought up some points that I hadn't thought of before, like...

"The danger is that we can begin to read the Bible through the eyes of America rather than read America through the eyes of the Bible. We just want Jesus to be a good American."

The last part of the book consists of points that Shane and Chris make urging the reader to rethink the world, especially as an American living in America. Overall there are definitely some suggestions in there that I think some of us could learn from, in being better neighbors to not just our fellow Americans but to others around the world.

This book's antiwar themes are very prominent, as Shane is not one to dance around what he has to say. I'd like to share a few, brief, though-provoking passages/quotes...

"Jesus knew that his followers would face threats to their lives. But nowhere did Jesus teach that his followers should turn into wolves when they run into other scary wolves. He himself was killed like a sheep by wolves. By freely accepting crucifixion, he demonstrated what a sheep among wolves looks like. Refusing to become like the wolves to defeat the wolves. Jesus revealed that God, being love, chooses a different path - to suffer evil to overcome it."

"Christians must discern between the voices competing for their allegiance. Is history's voice the same as Jesus'? Does it call us to do the same things Jesus did?"

All in all, it made for an interesting read. Definitely worth checking out, though now that it's Election Day I hardly think anyone wants to hear the phrase "president" any more than absolutely necessary. But, this book is worth picking up, if for nothing else than the amazing artistry of the book. The entire thing is filled with colored paper, beautiful illustrations, cartoons and keeps you wanting to turn the page to see what's next (though I did find the parts that were intentionally misspelled/crossed out to be somewhat of a burden). I admire Shane, as I said before, for his passion and the way he lives out his beliefs and helps serve his fellow man...and he also has a beautiful way with words and makes it easy to read even the history that is this book.

Foolish Mortal - Interview with Andrew Schwab

I wasn't prepared or even aware that he would be calling in today, but I had the opportunity to chat with Andrew Schwab of Project 86 this afternoon. I was, however, VERY glad to get to talk to him! I gushed a little (off the air, thankfully) about how much I love his writing, specifically his book, It's All Downhill From Here: On The Road with Project 86. Project 86 and Spoken will be performing tonight at The Lighthouse Church in Burleson at 6pm. Email will be out there in the Powermobile, so make sure to stop by and say hi to him as well! Get ready to have your face rocked off!

Click here for the interview from earlier today.

Off the air, after the interview, I had to tell Andrew how David and I use the term "Foolish Mortal" a lot more now thanks to one of his songs.

Kevin Max Concert

Former DC Talk member Kevin Max provided music at a conference at The North Church in Carrollton on Tuesday night. Since the night service was open to the public I went with a few friends from church. We were able to take some pictures of and with Kevin and I had a chance to talk with him. I saw on his Myspace page that he has a motorcycle, so we talked about our motorcycles. And of course I asked him about his experience playing the lead in the new movie “The Imposter”.

Remember we are going to see “The Imposter” for a station fundraiser on Sunday October 12. It will be at 7PM at “The Studio Movie Grill” in Lewisville. Tickets are $7 and you can RSVP weekdays between 9 and 5 by calling our office at 214-353-8970. More info: Get-Together page.

Rapture Ready!: Adventures in the Parallel Universe of Christian Pop Culture by Daniel Radosh

It's a really long title for a book, but the instant I read that title, I knew I wanted to read this book. We, as Christians, are usually pretty aware of the 'parallel universe' we (or our elders) have created for ourselves. Many Christians exist completely inside their own Christian bubble and have little to nothing to do with the 'outside world.' There are lots of books written by and for Christians encouraging us to stay in that bubble, away from the temptations of 'the world' know, to be all safe and cozy in God's arms. There are also several books out there encouraging Christians to break out of the bubble and get down and dirty in the world. But, this book struck me as odd...written by an outsider about the Christian bubble. What could he possibly know about our bubble? Our culture? Would he just bash everything in that bubble? I wanted to know what he learned, how he went about studying it, and if he would see it a new light once he was done or if we would just prove his own point that Christians are, like, soooo lame. C'mon, Daniel Radosh...let me have it!

He openly admits that he did intend to set out in search of the weirdest, hardest-to-believe aspects of Christian culture. And while he is bombarded with Christian after Christian who are the stereotypical judgemental, close-minded 'freaks'...he does also encounter some Christians that he feels comfortable with, who help him to better understand what is going on inside the Christian bubble. Radosh travels all over the country attending seminars, concerts, meetings, conferences, wrestling matches, museum tours and of course, a live production of Bible Man. He points out the most ridiculous stuff (testamints anyone?) but also takes the time to embrace the aspects that are grace-filled and out of love. He speaks with Christian authors Frank Peretti and Ted Dekker. He spends time Jay Bakker. He visits ShoutFEST and Cornerstone Festival - where he learns a lot about the different types of Christians that exist in just the music world. He hangs out behind the scenes of a Christian Wresting match where some of the 'actors' are Christian while some aren't. Radosh even holds a completely made up interview with Stephen Baldwin, using passages from Baldwin's biography to respond to his questions. He browses the floor of a "Jesus Junk" Expo...where Jesus' face is plastered on all the silly stuff and marked $9.99. He certainly gets around and touches on a lot of areas that we, as Christians, are made fun of for. And some of it, rightly so.

There were times while reading this book that I completely agreed with Radosh. Yes, we DO look ridiculous having that type of stuff in our history and refusing to admit we are behind the times with this or that. But there were other times as well when I could feel my blood pressure beginning to rise, knowing that he just wasn't getting it. But then I'd have to remind myself least he was TRYING to get a grasp of it. Not just dismissing it away as, oh, they're just a bunch of crazy Christians. This book is riddled with foul language and misunderstandings...of jumping to conclusions and assuming that all Christians are 'that way.' But there is a lot of insight in here as well, as to how non-Christians view believers in the every day world. It's eye-opening, to say the least, to hear straight from the horse's mouth how certain things we do get misconstrued and twisted to make us look like complete idiots. He brings it around in the end and speaks of how both sides could learn from each other...and that more people should pay attention to what's going on in the Christian bubble, 'cause they just might be missing out.

All in all, I'd say if you really want to know how those of us in this "Christian bubble" look from the outside, this is definitely a good read. If you'd rather not know, then...shy away.

Keep rockin' for Christ!

Texas Fried State Fair

We hear these crazy stories every year about this time when the State Fair of Texas rolls around. Someone is always coming up with something new we can [Texas twang] DEEP FRY [/Texas twang]! This year is definitely no exception.

Topping the list: Chicken Fried Bacon!

I mean, seriously? Something as unhealthy as bacon, which is fried to begin with...then make it 10 times worse by battering it and frying it again?! Holy moo cows! Still there's a part of me that is curious. Haha! That's how they get us!

Here is a list of all things Fried:

What do you find mind-boggling? Is there anything you can't wait to try? Let us know!

Head is Coming!

Some of you may have heard of the band Korn… They are a secular band, whose music meant a lot to me, before I became a Christian, before finding Christ I was in a dark place and was able to identify with their lyrics. Long story short, I found Jesus and no longer need to identify with the stuff their lyrics spoke about and quit listening to their music, because I felt led to only listen to Christian music. Then, about a year or so after I got saved, I heard that Brian “Head” Welch, their lead guitarist and founding member of the band became a Christian. I WAS SO EXCITED BECAUSE I FELT THAT HEAD’S GUITAR PLAYING, was the reason I liked Korn’s sound. I said to myself, “ Man, I can’t wait till he releases a CD. A year or so after that I heard he was writing a book, you can find my review of the book here Save Me From Myself book review . In the book Head talks about writing music, and again I was excited with the prospect that head would be using his talent to write awesome guitar music to share things the Lord has done in his life. Shortly after reading the book I heard he was finally releasing his first single and then the full length album shortly after that. Well, the album, Save Me From Myself, dropped on 9/9/08, and all I can say is…..

The wait for this CD was well worth it! Head did not disappoint with this CD. I like EVERY SONG! My favorite songs are L.O.V.E and Adonai you can get the whole CD off of Itunes, or from his label itself Driven Music Store.

Also, Head is coming to Dallas on September 19, or a in-store book/CD signing at Borders Books in Dallas. You can find out more Info about that on Head's Myspace . Also, on September 18 Head will be doing another on-air interview with Drue. Keep listening for the exact time coming soon.

Decyfer Down Again

Decyfer Down must like us. They drop in every chance they get. And we certainly don't mind, they're really nice guys! They stopped by in the middle of my shift today and I chatted with them for a few minutes about what they've been up to since our last visit, the new album coming in early 2009, their show tonite, and they treated us with an acoustic version of their new single, "Crash." According to the guys we got to premiere that little slice of audio to the world. How exciting (and it was very, very good indeed)!

They're playing an acoustic show tonite at The Abbey Church in Azle, and they'll be taking Q&A (apparently anything regarding the band, their personal lives and/or theological questions are welcome, "bring it on" they said!).

You can hear the interview here (minus the acoustic song, sorry...copyright laws and all that).

August Get-Together: Paintball, Mini-Golf & More

Saturday many of the Power FM staff were at X-drenalin Zone and Mountasia Golf. Unfortunately all staff members chickened out of paint ball but we had a great time playing miniature golf and riding go-carts with listeners. I must say that Dawn was ready to paint ball but none of the other staff members were up to her challenge. Me, Drue, Rachel, and David had plenty of attempts on the go-carts. I am an avid golfer but I lost in an 18 hole competition to Club 3000 member Patrick. Drue, Rachel, David, and Leslie also enjoyed miniature golf. Thanks to the staffs of X-drenalin Zone and Mountasia Golf for having us out, and thanks to all the listeners who took time to spend with us over the Labor Day weekend.

I hope to see you at our next outing.

Power FM has spoiled me

After having made a weekend trip back home to Abilene, TX I appreciate Power FM **streches out arms** THIS much!!!
Back in A-Town -- btw giving a city a nickname doesn't make it any cooler ;) -- old school country stations run rampant. The alternative station only plays rap, and the rock station likes to stick to classic rock.
On top of that, we just recently got an extension of Air 1. Now, don't get me wrong here. We are all in this together and I appreciate that they play music that lifts up our awesome God. That being the case, Power FM has me spoiled.

Kutless followed by Thousand Foot Krutch followed by some harder stuff like Spoken and Demon Hunter equals an awesome song lineup.
Air 1 on the other hand enjoys mixing in some Bebo Norman and Brandon Heath. Again, don't take this the wrong way at all. I enjoy their music, but only when I'm in the mood for it. It's just that I happen to always be in the mood for some rock! lol

That is one (of the many) reasons I am thankful for Power FM. How bout you?!

San Diego

Just about every year since Valerie and I got married I've tagged along with her to a convention she attends for her job and the great thing is that it moves to different cities each time.

We've been to San Francisco, Chicago, Boston and now San Diego. She goes to convention stuff during the day and then we see the sites. In San Francisco we sailed on a big catamaran around Alcatraz and the Golden Gate Bridge. In Chicago we went out on a boat on Lake Michigan and in Boston we took a boat out to see the whales.

We continued the boating theme again by sailing around the bay in San Diego. It was just Valerie, me, Mavis (our Yorkie) and our skipper weaving in and around 4 aircraft carriers, assorted tall sail ships, like the HMS Surprise, and a Russian sub. I was in heaven.

A Busy Day!

We had not one, but TWO bands stop by today!

Deas Vail stopped by to tell us about their upcoming album. They're playing a show tomorrow night in Plano.

Then, just as their interview was finishing up, the guys from Capital Lights dropped in. They are playing tonight in Dallas, and DJ Drue Mitchell will be spinning!

If given the option...Dance or Die?

The new Family Force 5 CD came out on Tuesday, it's called Dance or Die. If you're wondering how it sounds, I suggest you venture over to where you can listen to the entire thing online! Sweet!

Chris and Dawn chatted with Chap Stique yesterday morning. Missed it? No worries, you can hear the audio from the interview on the Morning Show Page of our website. Enjoy!

Power FM has been on the air since 1999. It has always been our mission to glorify Jesus by leading believers into a closer walk with Him and drawing unbelievers into a relationship with Him.

We have worked very hard to let as many people know about the station as possible; going to concerts, cruising in the power-mobile, passing out flyers, but now the Lord has provided a new tool. THE POWER FM BILLBOARDS! That's right, be looking for a billboard near you. Here are some pictures of the first of 9 boards.

Pray with us that God will use these to draw new listeners to the station and turn hearts to Him.

More Power To ya!

Jade, Andi & Chris are pretty excited about the billboard.

Eddie is VERRRRY excited about it.

Yep, that's us!
